Theoretical perspectives of Particle Physics

W. Buchmüller

DESY, Hamburg, Germany

The facts that the energy density of cosmic rays is the same as that of starlight, the energy range - per particle - extends to the highest energies known to mankind and that we do not know where cosmic rays come from all lead to the subject of origin being an exciting one.

The symmetries of the standard model of particle physics point towards a unified theory of all particles and interactions. This leads to the quest for supersymmetry and to the prediction of baryon- and lepton-number nonconservation, with important implications for particle physics and cosmology.
